Or So You Thought...

Anybody remember playing a game called the Assumption Game? What nobody? Ok so real quick - basically, you assume to know-it-all about a particular subject. So to win, you have to be the player with the BEST ASSUMPTIONS about why certain things happen they way they do, are the way they are,,etc. For instance, why don't psychics win the lotteries? (hmm, that's a good one...) Or Mackgurl is from the South so she loves chitterlings and pig's feet...ehhhh

As a Black woman, I've experienced being followed in some stores  - shopping malls, jewelry stores. Annnnndddd I can admit that I've often assumed that they ASSUMED I was going to steal something. But the other day, I saw a post on social media that made me wonder about my ASSUMPTION - heck ALL of my ASSUMPTIONS! Check this out:

Wow! You mean it wasn't about them thinking this Black lady was going to steal something? This lady was, in fact, stealing a recipe?? PLOT TWIST!!! LOLBTW, did you catch the ASSUMPTION the other lady had - about black people not sharing recipes? Who knows, Mama might have been all too happy to share the recipe for chicken cutlets with her.

Be careful in your ASSUMPTIONS of people and everyday situations...ASSUMPTIONS lead to stereotypes...stereotypes can lead to bad feelings, unfounded fears and some other really dark places. So the next time, I'm followed around in a store, I'm going to assume it's because...

Sending virtual hugs,
Mackgurl

Work It

I found an old photo of me from many moons ago. I'm talking acid washed jeans, big glasses, big hair - the whole 9 yards. It's just a casual shot - me and a friend chilling on the couch (uh, no I don't plan to post it LOL) - but it got me thinking about yester-year or days of old (sheesh, that sounds kinda knightly)...You know, those days when your biggest worries included "are the quarter pounder combos on sale this week? Is HE going to ask me out? For Prom??" (HE didn't but I went to prom anyway and had a BLAST!) This is also about the time I got my first taste of adulthood - A JOB! A real one! Like actually doing things for someone other than my parents and grandparents in order to maintain my allowance (yes, I was one of those kids). Employee ID, Clock-In/Out, an actual check - shoot couldn't tell me nothing. I was a working WOMAN after all (okay so a working TEEN but still, LOL)  Guess where I worked? No, go ahead I'll wait... Time's u...

You Don't Have To be so mean

Someone asked me the other day " hey, don't you ever get tired of being so happy and positive all the time? How can you be so NICE?" I was thrown! Ok maybe not completely since I've heard a little about this before. "You always have a smile on your face...you're so happy...you're so NICE to EVERYBODY...I really like talking to you...thank you for being so kind...-it's rare" Even though I've heard these comments before, it still surprises me a little. Not that people think I'm nice but that so many people experience the opposite - often enough that they are shocked enough to comment. Makes you, ok me, wonder why are so many people not nice? Just plain old mean? How do they get that way? Can't make me believe that people are born that way...hmm course i have a seen pictures of newborn babies with some pretty mean mugs. Looking like they've been here before and experienced all the atrocities of life ALREADY!  But really - why?  ...

Very Superstitious

Do you think black cats portend bad tidings? Are you triskaidekaphobic (fear of the number 13)? Growing up, I used to hear all sorts of things that were supposedly bad luck or could bring on something that you'd rather not, well, bring on. There was the one about walking under a ladder...or how many of you remember that little ditty about stepping on a crack and breaking your Mama's back? Yeah? I thought you might LOL  I asked a few people about any superstitions that they may have heard/been told. Not all of them are omens of doom and gloom. Some are kinda funny and some you might even want to have happen. Like this first one: If palm of your left hand is itching, you're going to receive some money.       Okay, that's a superstition that I can deal with. Now don't go rubbing your left hand on poison ivy to make your palm itchy to get money. The only thing you're going to do is end up with itchy palms that will spread and have you bathing in oatmeal and ch...
